Devices and streams are different limits
Installing an app claims no capacity β a television that is switched off costs a provider nothing. So a well-run service lets you install on every screen you own β the living-room TV, the bedroom stick, two phones, a laptop β and only counts how many of them are playing at the same moment. That concurrent number is the real limit, and it is the one to compare between providers.
Marketing does not always keep the two apart, and the confusion is sometimes deliberate: 'works on all your devices' can describe a service that allows exactly one stream at a time. When you evaluate any provider, ask for the simultaneous number specifically, and ask for it in writing.
NixaTV's limits, plan by plan
NixaTV allows 2 simultaneous streams on the 1-month plan, 3 on the 3- and 6-month plans, and 4 on the 12-month plan. You can register an unlimited number of devices to the account; the limit applies only to how many play at the same moment. Longer terms carry higher allowances because subscriber churn, not streaming capacity, is what a term commitment actually saves β some of that saving comes back as streams.
The pricing page also offers a two-device tier on every plan at roughly 1.5 times the price, which doubles the stream allowance β up to 8 at once on the 12-month plan. Per stream, that tier is genuinely cheaper, which is the honest way to serve a large household: a bigger allowance at a smaller unit price, rather than a second full-price subscription.
How the rest of the market handles it
Mainstream bundles cluster tightly: YouTube TV allows 3 concurrent streams, Hulu + Live TV allows 2, and cable still largely prices per television through equipment rental β the old per-box model wearing a new bill. On-demand apps like Netflix tie the stream count to the tier you pay for, which is the same idea with different labels.
Unlicensed resellers are the outlier in the other direction: the default is usually a single 'connection', with each additional one sold separately per device. A family of four can quietly end up paying triple the advertised price β which is worth remembering whenever an advertised price looks impossible. The stream limit is one of the first places the real cost hides.
Why stream limits exist at all
Three reasons, all structural. Rights agreements price distribution by audience, so a subscription that could serve unlimited simultaneous viewers would be priced like a sports bar, not a household. Server capacity is provisioned for the 9pm Sunday peak, and concurrent streams are exactly what that peak is made of. And without a cap, one paid account would quietly serve an entire apartment building.
A published, honest stream limit is therefore a mildly good sign: it means the provider is doing capacity planning and pricing the service to survive. The red flag is not the existence of a limit β it is a limit that only becomes visible after you have paid.
How many streams does a household actually need?
Count the moments, not the people. A couple almost never exceeds 2 simultaneous streams. A family with children peaks at 3 in practice β typically the main TV plus a bedroom and a tablet during the same evening hour. Two sports fans following different games while a third screen runs elsewhere is the realistic case for 4.
Registered devices are a different count entirely, and with unlimited installs it never constrains you: install on everything, including the phone you travel with, and let the concurrent limit be the only number you manage. Most households discover they need one fewer simultaneous stream than they guessed.
The bandwidth side of the same question
Your internet connection imposes its own limit before any provider does. Budget 10 Mbps sustained per 1080p stream and 25 Mbps per 4K stream, with headroom for whatever else the household is doing: three 1080p streams want a 50 Mbps connection, comfortably. A plan's allowance is worthless if the line cannot carry it at 9pm.
Concurrency also amplifies Wi-Fi problems β three streams over one congested 2.4 GHz band will all stutter together. Put the main television on Ethernet and the other screens on 5 GHz, and the streams stop competing for the same air.
What happens when you hit the limit
Behavior varies by service: most refuse the newest stream with an on-screen message, some drop the oldest one instead. Either way it resolves the moment one screen stops playing β nothing about the account breaks, and nobody needs to contact support. If you hit the cap regularly rather than occasionally, that is the signal to move up a tier or a term.
Before paying anyone β us included β apply the checklist rule: the simultaneous stream count belongs in writing next to the price, alongside the licensing statement, the uptime SLA and the refund terms. A provider vague about this number before the sale will be vague about everything after it.
